M87
M87 is a giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster, about 54–55 million light-years away. Its central black hole, M87*, powers an accretion environment associated with a long jet. The Event Horizon Telescope’s 2019 release reconstructed a radio ring around the black hole’s shadow from April 2017 observations. Hubble’s galaxy and jet images cover much larger scales, connecting the compact central object with its surrounding stellar system.
