Whirlpool
The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, has prominent spiral arms traced by dust, young stars and ionised gas. Gravitational interaction with its companion NGC 5195 helps shape the disk and concentrate star-forming material. Hubble and Webb observe different components of that structure at different wavelengths. The arms are evolving patterns within an orbiting population, rather than rigid strips that carry every star around together.
NASA, ESA, S. Beckwith (STScI) and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)Individual planetary systems are not mapped in this galaxy.
