Earth

Earth’s magnetic field is generated by motion in its electrically conducting outer core. The field shapes the planet’s interaction with the solar wind, while auroras reveal some of the resulting particle motion. Measurements combine signals from the core, crust, ionosphere and even moving ocean water. ESA’s Swarm mission helps separate those contributions, making the field a tool for investigating processes both above and below the surface.

About these records

Every launch classified Earth Science by the production source, including commercial Earth observation and failed attempts; linked events follow the same canonical graph. Communications and navigation launches are excluded unless explicitly classified Earth Science. Reviewed canonical exceptions include Suomi NPP, whose lightweight source projection omits its mission type. Launch outcomes describe the recorded flight. They do not establish whether an old spacecraft is operating today. Events show published targets unless the record confirms an outcome.
